I)Biography:
Date of Birth: September 21, 1947
Birth Place: Portland, Maine
Mother: Nellie Ruth Pillsbury
Father: Donald King
Siblings - Brother: David King, born 1945
Wife: Tabitha Spruce
Children: Joe, Owen, and Naomi
Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947 at the Maine General Hospital in Portland Maine. His parents were Donald Edwin King and Ruth Pillsbury King. Stephen being the only natural born child in the family and his older brother David having been adopted at birth two years earlier.
He and his brother David spent much of their childhood living between Fort Wayne, Indiana, (where his father's family lived) and Massachusetts and Maine with his mother and her family. Eventually the brothers settled with their mother in Durham Maine, where the boys attended school. They were raised mainly by their mother, their father having left home one day for a package of cigarettes and never returning.
Stephen King began his actual writing career in January of 1959 when David King and Stephen decided to publish their own local town newspaper named Dave's Rag. David bought a mimeograph and they created a paper that sold for five cents an issue.
King graduated high school in 1966, then went on to the University of Maine at Orono to earn a Bachelors of Arts degree in English. It was while in College that King met his wife, Tabitha Spruce, while they were both working at the Folger Campus Library. In 1970 King graduated, and a year later married Miss Spruce.
He was unable to find work teaching initially, and he and Tabitha lived off of his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loans and savings. Occasionally King would sell one of his short stories, which brought in some money, but this began to happen after many, many rejection letters. His first published story was "I Was a Teenage Grave Robber" in Comics Review in 1967. Hard work and persistent writing paid off eventually. King published stories more frequently, in men's magazines mainly, and many of these stories were later compiled into the Night Shift collection.
King began teaching high school in 1971at Hamden Public High School in Maine. He wrote on weekends and evenings, still managing to produce short stories and novels. None of the novels were accepted for publication until the spring of 1973 when Carrie was published, after King's wife fished it out of the garbage where he had thrown it during an exceptionally disheartened mood. Carrie brought financial relief, and freedom in that it enabled King to leave teaching and concentrate solely on his writing.
His first novel Carrie was a huge success, and following it were a long list of novels that soon made Stephen King a name known in households the world over.
In his books King explored almost every terror-producing theme imaginable, from vampires, rabid dogs, deranged killers, and a pyromaniac to ghosts, extrasensory perception and telekinesis, biological warfare, and even a malevolent automobile. Though his work was disparaged as undisciplined and inelegant, King was a talented storyteller whose books gain their effect from realistic detail, forceful plotting, and the author's undoubted ability to involve and scare the reader. King's stories reverberate with subtexts."Carrie (his first novel), resonates with a residule dread of the women's liberation movement. Salem's lot reflects America's post-Watergate fear that corruption exists on every level of society."* Stephen King's first novel was a huge success, and following it were a long list of novels that soon made Stephen King a name known in households the world over.
King's major contribution to horror literature is to situate it within the general anxieties of contemporary life. His fucus is not on vampires, werewolves and such but on ordinary people faced with these horrors and the darker horrors of the lost jobs, disintegrating families, mental breakdown, and all the other fears that haunt the atomic age."His novels vindicate the dreads of that age."**
By the early 1990s King's books had sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, and his name had become synonymous with the genre of horror fiction. King also wrote the short stories collected in Night Shift (1978), as well as several novellas and motion-picture screenplays. Some of his novels were successfully adapted for the screen by such directors as Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, and Rob Reiner.
In June 1999 Stephen King was severely injured in an accident that left him in critical condition with injuries to his lung, broken ribs, a broken leg and a severely fractured hip. After three weeks of operations he was released from the Central Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. Stephen continues to be bedridden and requires intensive rehabilitation over the remainder of this year. He is expected to be able to walk about 9-12 months after the accident...
